Water properties

Learning about the different water properties has been extremely helpful when setting up our freshwater tanks. Water is a polar molecule with a negative oxygen and two positive hydrogens. These together make a covalent bond. I have learned that water is considered the universal solvent and a solute is what is being dissolved inside of it. pH is also a vary large factor in making sure our water is ready to support our shrimp. For instance pure water has a neutral pH which is equivalent to seven on the pH scale. The scale ranges from 0-14. Fish reproductions stops at four and death occurs at three.
The water in our lakes have a very high surface tension. They also have cohesion which is when water sticks to each other. If adhesion takes place water sticks to another surface. They have a very high specific heat in water. So when testing the temperature it is important to not just test the top of the tank but all of it.
